Hartford has constant construction, utility and roadway work: a dense downtown, highway interchanges where I-84 and I-91 meet, campus and hospital facilities projects, municipal crews, and rail and transit activity. All of it needs high-visibility apparel, and most of it needs a company name on it.
The ANSI classes
High-visibility apparel is governed by ANSI/ISEA 107.
- Type O, Class 1 — off-road only. Yards, lots and equipment operators away from public traffic.
- Type R, Class 2 — roadway work at moderate traffic speeds, and the common requirement for municipal, utility and site crews.
- Type R or P, Class 3 — highest visibility, required near high-speed roadways and whenever the whole body must be conspicuous. Sleeves are required, so a Class 3 vest alone does not exist.
Highway work around the I-84 and I-91 interchange is exactly the setting where Class 3 applies rather than Class 2, and it is worth confirming which has been specified for your crews rather than assuming.
Flame resistance and utility work
Utility, electrical and certain industrial work brings FR requirements into play, and two points get missed regularly. Hi-vis and FR are separate standards — a garment can satisfy one and not the other, and where both apply you need a garment certified for both rather than one of each layered casually.
Second, and more often overlooked, the decoration itself must be FR-compatible. Ordinary polyester embroidery thread and standard heat transfers are not, and applying them can compromise the rating, because certification covers the garment as decorated rather than as it left the mill. We source FR-compatible thread and transfers for these jobs rather than treating them as ordinary decoration.
Branding without losing the rating
On standard hi-vis, decoration covering background material or interrupting a reflective stripe can push a garment out of compliance. We place logos so certified areas stay intact, keep heat-applied elements clear of reflective tape, and size artwork to the space available rather than forcing it somewhere that costs the rating.
Embroidery suits hi-vis polos and jackets. On mesh vests and technical fabrics where stitching perforates the material, heat transfer is the better method.
Running it as a program, not a purchase
Hi-vis is consumable. Fluorescent fabric fades with washing and UV, reflective tape degrades with wear, and a garment gone chalky is not performing whatever its label says. Contractors who manage this well standardize on one or two garment styles, keep a stored digitized logo and written spec so replacements are routine, and budget replacement on a cycle rather than treating it as a surprise.
That is the part distance does not affect. A program that reorders on a schedule works the same whether we are ten minutes away or forty. Many contractors pair hi-vis for field crews with standard branded shirts for supervisory staff — see custom apparel, running from the same logo file.
Lead times and delivery
About two weeks from approved artwork for standard decorated hi-vis, plus delivery to Hartford. FR garments and sizes above 3XL frequently have to be brought in and take longer, so give us the full size range and any FR requirement up front, and build in a few extra days.
