West Haven’s hi-vis requirement comes from city public works and parks crews, shoreline and seawall maintenance, contractors and utility work, campus and hospital facilities teams, and the marine and dock trades along the harbor. It is a coastal working environment, which changes what lasts.

The ANSI classes

High-visibility apparel is governed by ANSI/ISEA 107.

  • Type O, Class 1 – off-road only. Yards, lots and equipment operators away from public traffic.
  • Type R, Class 2 – roadway work at moderate speeds. This covers most municipal, utility and contractor crews in West Haven.
  • Type R or P, Class 3 – highest visibility, required near high-speed roadways and whenever the whole body must be conspicuous. Sleeves are required, so a Class 3 vest alone does not exist.

The class is a property of the finished garment – how much fluorescent background fabric and retroreflective tape it carries – which is exactly why decoration placement is not cosmetic.

What salt air does to hi-vis

This is the West Haven-specific issue and it is routinely overlooked. Coastal conditions accelerate the failure of high-visibility apparel in two ways. Salt and moisture degrade retroreflective tape and its adhesion faster than inland exposure does, and the combination of strong direct sun off water plus salt spray fades fluorescent background fabric noticeably faster.

The practical consequence is that a garment which would last a year inland may need replacing sooner on the shoreline. Crews working seawalls, docks and beachfront should inspect tape adhesion and background color more often than the calendar suggests, because a faded vest is not compliant regardless of what the label says. Rinsing salt off garments rather than letting it dry in materially extends their life.

Branding without losing the rating

Decoration covering background material or interrupting a reflective stripe can put a garment out of compliance. We place logos so certified areas stay intact, keep heat-applied elements clear of reflective tape, and size artwork to the space available rather than forcing it somewhere that costs the rating.

Embroidery works well on hi-vis polos and jackets. On mesh vests and technical fabrics where stitching perforates the material, heat transfer is better. Where flame-resistant garments apply, decoration must be FR-compatible – standard thread and ordinary transfers are not – and we source accordingly.

What crews here typically run

A Class 2 vest for general work, hi-vis tees or polos in the warmer months, and a Class 3 waterproof or insulated jacket for winter and storm response. Coastal storm work makes genuinely waterproof outerwear worth paying for rather than economizing on, since crews here are outside in weather that inland towns simply do not get.

Many contractors run hi-vis for field crews alongside standard branded shirts for supervisory staff – see custom apparel. Both can run from the same stored logo file.

Lead times

About two weeks from approved artwork for standard decorated hi-vis. Sizes above 3XL and specialized FR garments often have to be brought in, so give us the whole size range up front. West Haven is roughly fifteen minutes from our Hamden shop, so urgent orders can be collected rather than shipped.

Tell us the environment, including whether crews work on the shoreline, and any class specified for you. We will identify compliant garments, show where a logo can safely sit, and quote it.
