Woodbridge’s high-visibility requirement is almost entirely residential and roadside rather than industrial: landscaping and tree services, builders and remodelers, paving and driveway contractors, utility work, and town public works and parks crews. The common factor is crews working on quiet residential streets and private property.
The ANSI classes
High-visibility apparel is governed by ANSI/ISEA 107.
- Type O, Class 1 — off-road only. Yards, driveways, private property and equipment operators away from public traffic.
- Type R, Class 2 — roadway work at moderate traffic speeds, and the standard requirement for most landscaping, municipal and site crews working on or beside a street.
- Type R or P, Class 3 — highest visibility, required near high-speed roadways and whenever the whole body must be conspicuous. Sleeves are required, so a Class 3 vest alone does not exist.
Class is a property of the finished garment — how much fluorescent background fabric and retroreflective tape it carries — which is why decoration placement is not cosmetic.
Presentable at a private home
This is the defining Woodbridge tension. A crew working outside a client’s house needs to be conspicuous for safety and presentable for the homeowner, and cheap hi-vis manages neither — a faded, ill-fitting vest thrown over a t-shirt reads as careless to exactly the customer you are trying to impress.
The better approach is hi-vis that is part of the uniform rather than an afterthought. Hi-vis polos and t-shirts in the correct class look considerably more deliberate than a vest over street clothes, fit properly, and are far more comfortable in summer — which means crews actually keep them on, the entire point of the exercise. Combined with clean embroidered branding they read as a professional outfit rather than a compliance obligation.
Small crews, sensible programs
Most Woodbridge contractors are outfitting a handful of people. That argues for buying a slightly better garment than the minimum — the total spend is small and the replacement cycle stretches from seasonal to annual — and for standardizing on one or two styles so replacements are simple. A stored digitized logo and a fixed garment spec makes a two-vest reorder a phone call rather than a project.
Seasonal wear and replacement
Landscaping and tree crews here work most of the year, which means sustained UV through summer and hard wear in winter. Hi-vis is consumable: fluorescent fabric fades with sun and washing, and reflective tape degrades. A garment gone chalky is not compliant regardless of its label.
Branding without losing the rating
Decoration covering background material or interrupting a reflective stripe can push a garment out of compliance. We place logos so certified areas stay intact, keep heat-applied elements clear of reflective tape, and size artwork to the space available.
Embroidery suits hi-vis polos and jackets. On mesh vests and technical fabrics where stitching perforates the material, heat transfer is better. Most contractors pair hi-vis for field crews with standard branded polos for estimators and office staff — see custom apparel, which runs from the same logo file.
Lead times
About two weeks from approved artwork for standard decorated hi-vis. Sizes above 3XL and specialized FR garments often have to be brought in, so give us the full size range up front. Woodbridge is ten minutes from our Hamden shop for urgent collection.
