Branford’s t-shirt work is mostly community driven: school and youth sports across three seasons, summer shoreline programs and camps, town events around the green, charity runs, and merchandise for businesses and organizations that want something visitors will actually buy.
Choosing the blank
- Standard cotton around 5.3 oz is the classic event tee – prints beautifully, wears hard, costs least.
- Ring-spun cotton at 4.3 to 4.5 oz is noticeably softer with better drape. For anything being sold rather than given away, treat this as the minimum.
- Blends and tri-blends are softer again, heathered, with some stretch – the usual choice for merchandise meant to feel like retail. Colors read slightly muted.
- Performance polyester for athletics and summer waterfront programs, with inks selected to resist dye migration.
Shoreline merchandise that sells
A meaningful share of Branford t-shirt work is merchandise rather than giveaway – shirts sold at a shop counter, a marina, a summer program or a town event, often to visitors. That is a genuinely different product from a free event tee.
Visitors buy a shirt because they like it and because it references a place they enjoyed, not because it carries a business name. Designs that lean on the town, the shoreline or the islands sell far better than a logo with a year underneath. A softer blank matters because the buyer is comparing it to shirts they would buy in a shop. And the size run should be weighted to adults across a broad range, since under-ordering larger sizes is the usual way a merchandise run leaves money unclaimed.
How price behaves
Screen printing carries a fixed setup cost per color and a low cost per shirt after. So quantity moves price hard – 24 to 72 shirts changes per-unit cost more than most people expect – and each extra ink color means another screen and another pass. A strong one or two color design on a good blank almost always beats a six-color design on a cheap one, in cost and appearance both.
For a small town where runs are modest, this matters: keeping the color count down is usually the difference between a viable merchandise price and an unviable one.
Schools and youth sports
Youth sizing is its own curve, and ordering adult smalls for a middle school team is a common and costly mistake. Booster fundraising shirts need to be good enough that families choose to buy them. Sponsor logos on the back frequently fund the run, so leave space for them in the design from the start.
Timing and the summer squeeze
Standard turnaround is about two weeks from approved artwork. The seasonal complication is that shoreline programs, camps and summer merchandise all get ordered in the same narrow spring window, which puts pressure on blank availability rather than press capacity. Ordering four to six weeks earlier than feels necessary is what secures your first-choice garment.
Send vector artwork – .ai, .eps or a high-resolution .pdf. Anything pulled off a website needs redrawing first, which is the usual reason a job runs late.
Start a Branford t-shirt order
Send the design, a rough quantity and the date you need them. If the shirts are being sold rather than handed out, say so – it changes what we would recommend on both blank and artwork.
