Madison’s high-visibility requirement comes from town public works and parks crews, beach and shoreline maintenance, contractors and utility work along Route 1 and I-95, landscaping and tree services, and grounds crews. It is a coastal working environment with a heavy summer peak, and both of those change what lasts.

The ANSI classes

High-visibility apparel is governed by ANSI/ISEA 107.

• Type O, Class 1 — off-road only. Yards, beach lots, parks and equipment operators away from public traffic.
• Type R, Class 2 — roadway work at moderate traffic speeds, and the usual requirement for municipal, utility and landscaping crews working on or beside a street.
• Type R or P, Class 3 — highest visibility, required near high-speed roadways such as I-95 and whenever the whole body must be conspicuous. Sleeves are required, so a Class 3 vest alone does not exist.

Class is a property of the finished garment — how much fluorescent background fabric and retroreflective tape it carries — which is why decoration placement is not cosmetic.

Summer crowds are their own hazard

Madison has a specific seasonal issue: town crews, parks staff and contractors work through a summer where traffic volumes and pedestrian numbers rise sharply around the beaches and town centre, often including drivers unfamiliar with the roads. Class 2 is the sensible default anywhere staff can step into or near live traffic during that period, even for work that would be borderline off-road in February. It costs very little more and removes the argument entirely.

Salt and sun shorten the cycle

Coastal conditions degrade hi-vis faster than inland exposure. Salt and moisture attack retroreflective tape and its adhesion, and strong direct sun off water and sand fades fluorescent background fabric noticeably faster. A vest that would last a year inland may not on a beachfront crew.

Rinsing salt off garments rather than letting it dry in extends their life materially. Inspect tape adhesion and background color more often than the calendar suggests, because a faded garment is not compliant regardless of what the label says, and inspectors do notice.

Branding without losing the rating

Decoration covering background material or interrupting a reflective stripe can push a garment out of compliance. We place logos so certified areas stay intact, keep heat-applied elements clear of reflective tape, and size artwork to the space available.

Embroidery suits hi-vis polos and jackets. On mesh vests and technical fabrics where stitching perforates the material, heat transfer is better. Where flame-resistant garments apply, decoration must also be FR-compatible — ordinary thread and standard transfers are not.

Lead times

About two weeks from approved artwork for standard decorated hi-vis. Sizes above 3XL and specialized FR garments often have to be brought in, so give us the full size range up front. Madison is roughly thirty minutes from our Hamden shop.
