The practical consequence is simple and worth taking seriously: order in February or March for a June program. Ordering in May means taking whatever colors and styles are still in the warehouse.

Which method to use

Screen printing pushes ink through a mesh stencil, one screen per color. Setup is the expensive part, so cost per shirt drops steeply with volume. Right for camp and beach program tees, team shirts, event and race shirts, and anything sold at a table.

Embroidery stitches your logo in thread from a digitized file. No screens means small runs are economical and the finish lasts as long as the garment. Right for boutique and restaurant staff polos, park and marina crew wear, fleece, jackets and caps.

What sun and salt do to a garment

A shirt worn on a Madison beach all summer takes more UV in three months than an office polo takes in three years, and the effects are predictable. Printed ink fades faster than embroidery thread, so anything worn across a whole season should be stitched. Mid-tone colors show fading far less than deep saturated ones. For anything worn in or near the water, performance polyester rather than cotton is the practical answer, and it needs inks chosen to resist dye migration — we handle that, but it does shape what is achievable on dark garments.

Salt also corrodes zippers and snaps faster than buyers expect, so on outerwear it is worth specifying decent hardware rather than the cheapest shell.

Embroidery needs a digitized stitch file, created once and kept so reorders match. Standard turnaround is roughly two weeks from approved artwork; in the spring rush, build in more.
