North Haven has a higher concentration of hi-vis demand than most towns its size. Warehousing and distribution operations run forklift traffic all day, manufacturing sites have designated traffic routes on the floor, and contractors, utility crews and highway work along the Route 5 and I-91 corridor all require conspicuous apparel. Getting the specification right matters more here than almost anywhere else we serve.
The ANSI classes
High-visibility apparel is governed by ANSI/ISEA 107.
- Type O, Class 1 – off-road environments. Warehouse floors, yards, parking areas and equipment operators away from public traffic. A great deal of North Haven’s distribution activity sits here.
- Type R, Class 2 – roadway work at moderate speeds, and the standard requirement for site, utility and municipal crews.
- Type R or P, Class 3 – highest visibility, for high-speed roadways and whenever the whole body must be conspicuous. Sleeves are required, so a Class 3 vest alone does not exist.
The class is a property of the finished garment – how much fluorescent background fabric and retroreflective tape it carries – which is why decoration is not a purely cosmetic decision.
Indoor warehouse hi-vis is its own problem
A distribution center is warm, and a vest worn over a shirt all shift is uncomfortable. That drives a lot of North Haven operations toward hi-vis t-shirts and polos rather than vests, so the garment itself carries the rating and there is nothing extra to put on. It is more comfortable, more consistently worn, and easier to brand cleanly – but it means every shirt must meet the standard, not just a vest sitting in a bin by the door.
The trade-off is replacement cost, since shirts wear out faster than vests. Plan for it rather than being surprised by it.
Branding without losing the rating
Decoration covering background material or interrupting a reflective stripe can push a garment out of compliance. We place logos so certified areas stay intact, keep heat-applied elements clear of reflective tape, and scale artwork to the available space rather than forcing it somewhere that costs you the rating.
Embroidery suits hi-vis polos and jackets. On mesh vests and technical fabrics where stitching perforates the material, heat transfer is the better method. Where flame-resistant garments are required, decoration must be FR-compatible too – ordinary thread and standard transfers are not – and we source accordingly.
Replacement cycles
Hi-vis is consumable. Fluorescent fabric fades with washing and UV, and reflective tape degrades. A garment gone chalky is not performing whatever the label says, and inspectors do notice. In a high-turnover distribution setting the practical approach is a fixed garment spec and a stored digitized logo so replacements are routine, plus buying a slightly better garment to turn a quarterly cycle into an annual one.
Many operations pair hi-vis on the floor with standard branded shirts for office and supervisory staff – see custom apparel. Both can run from the same stored logo file.
Lead times
Standard decorated hi-vis takes about two weeks from approved artwork. Sizes above 3XL and specialized FR garments often have to be brought in, so give us the whole size range up front. North Haven is roughly fifteen minutes from our Hamden shop, so urgent orders can be collected rather than shipped.
