Fairfield produces a high volume of t-shirt work, driven mainly by two universities, a large school system with an active sports program, summer beach and camp programs, and a steady calendar of charity runs and community fundraisers. Almost all of it is volume printing against a fixed date.

Campus ordering, and the September problem

Student organizations, clubs, intramural teams, Greek life and orientation programs all order at the same time – the opening weeks of the academic year – and they are competing not just with each other but with every campus in the country doing the same thing. Blank availability in popular styles and colors gets genuinely tight in late August and early September.

The fix is unglamorous but effective: decide the design in the spring, or at the very least confirm quantities and garment before August. Groups that order early get their first choice; groups that order in the last week take whatever is still in the warehouse.

Choosing the blank

• Standard cotton around 5.3 oz is the classic event tee – prints beautifully, wears hard, costs least.
• Ring-spun cotton at 4.3 to 4.5 oz is noticeably softer with better drape. For a student audience this is usually worth the small premium, because students simply do not wear a shirt they find scratchy.
• Blends and tri-blends are softer again, heathered, with some stretch – the default for anything meant to feel like retail merchandise. Colors read slightly muted.
• Performance polyester for athletics and summer beach programs, with inks selected to resist dye migration.

Shirts that get sold

A good share of Fairfield work is merchandise rather than giveaway – club fundraising, booster sales, event merchandise. A giveaway shirt only has to be acceptable; a shirt someone pays twenty dollars for has to be one they would choose in a shop. That means a softer blank, a design that works as a graphic rather than a logo with a date under it, and a size run weighted to who actually buys. Under-ordering larger sizes is the standard way a merchandise run leaves money unclaimed.

How price behaves

Screen printing has a fixed setup per color and a low cost per shirt after. Quantity therefore moves price hard – 24 to 72 shirts changes the per-unit cost more than most people expect – and each extra ink color is another screen and another pass. A confident one or two color design on a good blank almost always beats a six-color design on a cheap one.

Back prints count as a second location, though for charity runs and fundraisers the sponsor logos on the back are usually what funds the order.

Sizing

A campus audience sizes smaller than a general community one; a community race or family event skews toward L and XL with real demand above 2XL. School teams need youth curves, which are different again. Tell us the audience and we will suggest a breakdown, and always add a modest overage – running out at an event costs more than a dozen spare shirts.

Timing and delivery

Standard turnaround is about two weeks from approved artwork, plus delivery to Fairfield. Send vector artwork – .ai, .eps or a high-resolution .pdf – since anything pulled off a website needs redrawing first, which is the usual reason a job runs late. Given the distance, build a few extra days in rather than working to the wire.
