New Haven generates an unusual volume of t-shirt work for a city its size, and almost all of it is deadline-driven: orientation week, a road race, a conference, a fundraiser, a season opener. Pick the shirt before you pick the price

The blank matters more than most buyers expect, and it is where a cheap quote usually hides.

• Standard cotton (around 5.3 oz) is the classic event tee. Durable, prints beautifully, costs the least. It will shrink slightly and it is not the shirt someone wears to the gym.
• Ring-spun cotton (4.3 to 4.5 oz) is noticeably softer and drapes better. It costs a little more and it is the difference between a shirt that gets worn and a shirt that ends up in a drawer. For anything people choose to wear rather than have to wear, it is worth it.
• Blends and tri-blends are softer still, with a heathered look and more stretch. Good for retail-feel merchandise and student groups. Colors sit slightly muted because the fabric is not pure white underneath.
• Performance polyester is the right call for anything athletic. Requires ink chosen to resist dye migration, which we handle, but it does affect what is possible on dark colors.

If the goal is that people actually wear the shirt afterward, spend the extra forty cents on the blank rather than adding a fourth ink color.

How pricing really works

Screen printing has a fixed setup cost per color, then a low cost per shirt. That produces two effects worth planning around. First, quantity moves the price hard: the jump from 24 shirts to 72 changes the per-unit cost far more than most people expect. Second, the number of ink colors matters as much as the quantity, because each color is a separate screen and a separate pass. A confident one or two color design on a good blank almost always beats a six-color design on a cheap one.

Printing on both front and back is a second location and priced accordingly. Sponsor logos on a back are extremely common for New Haven fundraisers and community races, and they are usually worth it because they are what pays for the shirts.

Sizing a group you cannot poll

Events are the hard case, because you are guessing. A workable starting distribution for a general adult audience skews toward L and XL, with real demand above 2XL that people routinely underestimate. If you are ordering for a campus population the curve shifts smaller; for a trades or community audience it shifts larger. Tell us the audience and we will suggest a breakdown rather than making you invent one.

Order a modest overage. Running out of shirts at an event costs more in goodwill than the twelve extra shirts cost in cash.

Artwork and deadlines

Send vector art (.ai, .eps, or a high-resolution .pdf) and your job goes straight to production. A logo saved off a website will need redrawing first, which is the single most common reason an order runs late. We will tell you what you have before you commit.

Standard turnaround is about two weeks from approved artwork. Rush is often possible and the limiting factor is usually blank availability, not press time, so tell us the real date early.
