New Haven runs on organizations that need their people identifiable: hospital departments, university programs, restaurant floor staff, lab teams, and the volunteer crews behind the city’s festivals and road races. Screen Tek has been decorating apparel for those groups for over 50 years from our shop in Hamden, about ten minutes up Whitney Avenue. Everything is printed and stitched in house, which is why we can turn a New Haven order around without shipping it to a third party and hoping for the best.

Screen printing and embroidery are different tools

People often ask for one when the other is the better fit, so it is worth being concrete about the difference.

Screen printing pushes ink through a mesh stencil, one screen per color. Setting up those screens takes time, so the economics reward volume: the more shirts in a run, the less each one costs. It lays down bright, opaque color on cotton and blends, handles large designs across a chest or back, and is the right answer for event tees, team shirts, fundraiser runs and anything where you want a graphic to read from across a room.

Embroidery stitches the design in thread from a digitized file. There are no screens, so small runs are practical, and the result reads as more formal and lasts as long as the garment does. It is the standard for polos, oxfords, fleece, jackets, caps and bags — anything a staff member wears repeatedly and needs to still look sharp after fifty washes. Fine detail and small text are its limits; below roughly a quarter inch, letterforms start to fill in.

A practical rule: if the garment is worn to represent the organization day after day, embroider it. If it is worn once for an event, or the design is large and colorful, print it. Plenty of New Haven customers order both on the same purchase order — embroidered polos for the staff, printed tees for the volunteers.

Who we decorate for in New Haven

The mix here is unusual for a city of this size, and it shapes what leaves our shop.

  • Healthcare and research. Departmental polos, embroidered fleece for staff who move between buildings, and printed tees for orientation cohorts and charity walks. Consistency across reorders matters more than anything, because a department that adds three people in March needs those three garments to match the twenty ordered in January.
  • Universities and student organizations. Club and intramural runs, orientation shirts, conference and reunion apparel. Usually screen printed, usually on a deadline that was set by an academic calendar rather than by production reality.
  • Restaurants and food service. Embroidered aprons, chef coats and staff shirts that survive commercial laundering. New Haven’s restaurant density means we see a lot of this, and durability of the decoration is the whole question — a logo that cracks after a month is a logo you pay for twice.
  • Trades, construction and property services. Embroidered work shirts and jackets, often alongside high-visibility gear. See our safety apparel in New Haven page if compliance is part of the requirement.
  • Nonprofits and community events. Printed tees in volume, frequently with sponsor logos on the back, and frequently needed the week before the event.

Artwork, and what actually causes delays

Vector artwork — .ai, .eps or a high-resolution .pdf — goes straight into production. A logo pulled off a website will need to be redrawn before it can be printed or digitized, and that is the single most common reason an order takes longer than the customer expected. If you are not sure what you have, send it over and we will tell you before you commit to anything.

Embroidery needs a digitized stitch file, which we create once and keep on record. Reorders then run straight from the stored file, so the logo on next year’s jackets matches this year’s exactly. Screen printing colors are matched to the Pantone system so your brand blue is the same blue every run.

Turnaround and getting garments to New Haven

Standard turnaround is roughly two weeks from artwork approval, depending on garment availability and the size of the run. Rush work is often possible — talk to us early rather than late, because the constraint is usually blank stock rather than press time. Being one town away means proofs, press checks and drop-offs are genuinely practical for New Haven customers, which is not something a national online printer can offer.

For larger organizations that reorder continuously, a branded web store removes the coordination problem entirely: staff order their own sizes, you approve the spend, and we ship.

Start a New Haven order

Send us the design, the garment you have in mind and roughly how many you need, and we will come back with options and a realistic date. If you are still deciding between printing and embroidery, describe how the garment will be used and we will tell you which one we would choose.
