High-visibility apparel is needed across every part of New Haven County – highway and utility work on I-91 and I-95, municipal public works and parks crews in every town, manufacturing and distribution floors, landscaping and tree services, marine and dock work on the shoreline, and construction of every scale. What changes between them is the class required and what the environment does to the garment.

The ANSI classes

High-visibility apparel in the United States is governed by ANSI/ISEA 107.

• Type O, Class 1 – off-road environments only. Warehouse floors, yards, boatyards, parking areas and equipment operators away from public traffic.
• Type R, Class 2 – roadway work at moderate traffic speeds. The most common requirement, covering the majority of municipal, utility, landscaping and site crews.
• Type R or P, Class 3 – the highest visibility level, required near high-speed roadways such as I-91 and I-95 and whenever the whole body must be conspicuous. Sleeves are required, so a Class 3 vest by itself does not exist.

Class is a property of the finished garment, determined by how much fluorescent background fabric and retroreflective tape it carries. That is exactly why decoration is not a cosmetic decision.

Branding without breaking compliance

A logo that covers background material or interrupts a reflective stripe can take a garment out of compliance. Done properly it does not. We place decoration so certified areas stay intact, keep heat-applied elements clear of reflective tape, and size artwork to the space available rather than forcing it somewhere that costs the rating.

Embroidery works well on hi-vis polos and jackets. On mesh vests and technical fabrics where stitching would perforate the material, heat transfer is the better route.

Flame resistance is a separate standard

Where FR garments are in scope – welding, certain production processes, some utility work – two points get missed regularly. Hi-vis and FR are different standards, so a garment can satisfy one and not the other; where both apply you need a garment certified for both. And the decoration itself must be FR-compatible, because the certification covers the garment as decorated. Ordinary polyester thread and standard transfers are not compatible, and we source appropriately rather than guess.

What the environment does to the garment

Hi-vis is consumable, and how fast it wears out depends on where it is worn. Fluorescent background fabric fades with UV and washing; reflective tape degrades with abrasion and time. On the shoreline – West Haven, Milford, Branford – salt accelerates both noticeably, and a garment that would last a year inland may not on a dock. Rinsing salt off rather than letting it dry in materially extends life.

A garment gone chalky is not performing regardless of what the label says, and inspectors do notice. Budget replacement on a cycle rather than treating it as a surprise, and buying a slightly better garment usually turns a quarterly replacement into an annual one.

Running it as a program

The operations that manage this well do three things: standardize on one or two garment styles rather than letting each crew choose, keep a stored digitized logo and written spec on record so replacements are a phone call, and pair hi-vis for field crews with standard branded shirts for supervisory staff running from the same logo file. About two weeks from approved artwork for standard decorated hi-vis. FR garments and sizes above 3XL frequently have to be brought in, so give us the full size range and any FR requirement up front.
